- And from the SMC:
- Applying for a log book
Members are reminded that a whole 2 weeks are needed and all
paperwork and money needs to be received before log books can be
done. The log book registrar is frequently receiving emails and
letter just days before rides and letters, with people demanding
their log book by the weekend. These requests often contain no money
or paperwork.
Full payment, with all paperwork completed, is necessary before any
log book will be issued.
- Arrows
Track marking arrows have arrived from AERA and are at Pat Hodgetts'
place. Clubs that have not yet requested arrows and need them should
contact Pat ASAP. Clubs that have already been issued with 110
arrows for legs one and two can get another 40 arrows for each of
these legs at no cost if they need them. Additional errors will be
charged at $1 per arrow.
- Trotting out your horse
The SMC wishes to remind riders of the rules concerning the trotting
out of horses for. vetting. It is important that your horse is run
out on a loose lead without being hunted or threatened by the
handler and/or outsiders. The horse has to be allowed to display its
natural gait. Please refer to rule V 3.4 for more detail.
- "90 day" rule for novice horses
The SMC would like to raise awareness of these important rules and
hopefully prevent members from inadvertently preparing for and
entering rides that they are not eligible to enter.
Rule H 5.1c) States that "a horse remains a novice horse until a
minimum period of 90 days must elapse commencing from the date the
horse successfully completes its first affiliated endurance ride".
Further, rule H 5.3 states that "a novice horse may only enter a
maximum of four affiliated endurance rides of between 80 and 120
kilometres inclusive in any 90 day period, retrospective from the
date of the ride to be entered."
If any rider is unsure of how these rules apply to their
circumstances they should seek clarification from either the Log
Book Registrar, Penny Barnes, or a Chief Steward. They will be only
too happy to help.
- Calling for a float
There have been a couple of instances recently where a rescue float
has been called for but when it arrived at the reported location the
rider had made a change of plan and continued on. If a rider decides
that they need to float their horse back to the ride base then they
should either speak directly to the CS or the person with the
official contact number. They can ask a check point official to make
contact but they SHOULD NOT relay this message via another rider.
This can be a difficult decision to make, but having made it it is
important to stick with it and stay where you are.

- The Boomers Creek ride scheduled for Sep-7 has been cancelled - see calendar
- Equine Influenza Vaccine Availability - Information
from Debbie Grull
Endurance stables in Tasmania, have all become aware that the dwindling
stock of vaccine is slowing down export of endurance horses overseas.
It is an export protocol requirement that horses moving to UAE are
vaccinated for Equine Influenza.
Equine Influenza vaccine is not commonly available, it is a restricted
vaccine in Australia and veterinarians administering the vaccine require
a permit for the Chief Veterinary Officer in their state, to administer
the vaccine.
One veterinary pharmaceutical company who used to supply Australia with
Equine influenza vaccine, sold the manufacturing rights for the vaccine
to a competitor.
When they realised they needed the stock here, the manufacturer told
them they weren't making any until July/August.
Once they have manufactured more vaccine, hopefully it won't take too
long to reach our shores.
If you have a marvellous horse available for sale to the UAE, be patient
and just wait a little bit. As the saying goes it won’t happen overnight,
but it will happen.
